PROJECT SUMMARY

WA Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure is planning a new temporary Youth and Family Plaza at Hillarys Boat Harbour.

The Plaza will be designed to appeal to young people aged 12–18, with activations and facilities for everyone to be built nearby.

We’re bringing together ideas from creative workshops and interviews with local young people and families, and turning them into design priorities and practical guidance for the Plaza designers.

Our engagement approach uses accessible, fun and creative activities to give young people the opportunity to:

  •  contribute meaningfully to a real public-space project intended for them;

  •  explore how places affect different people’s experiences and behaviour, and share their own stories if they’d like;

  •  think creatively and critically about public space and design;

  •  make connections to what they’re learning about geography, civics and citizenship, health and physical education, and design; and

  •  see how including young people’s perspectives can influence and enhance a project as it develops.
