PROJECT SUMMARY

The Stirling to Mount Lawley Primary Route early engagement project conducted on behalf of the Western Australia Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure examined how young people travel to school, what barriers they face, and what opportunities they see for safer, more enjoyable journeys. These insights are intended to inform the Primary Route’s planning and design.

Around 600 students across four schools contributed to the findings of a report and a unique companion magazine designed to spark intergenerational conversations about better streets and neighbourhoods for everyone. Participation methods included a survey, a series of creative workshops, and involvement as ‘young consultants’, generating both quantitative data and qualitative perspectives. The results highlight how travel behaviour is shaped not only by infrastructure but also by levels of safety, comfort, companionship and independence.

Together, the insights and recommendations arising from the engagement activities and analysis provide practical guidance for shaping a corridor that is functional, equitable and welcoming, ensuring that the State’s investment in the Stirling to Mount Lawley Primary Route delivers the greatest possible benefit to the Western Australian community.
